Democratic freshman representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY – 14th District) has enjoyed a meteoric rise in politics similar to that of her ideological counterpart President Donald Trump. Neither had any political experience prior to winning their respective campaigns and both have become the lightning rod to electorates with opposing ideological opinions. Case in point Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal legislation and her belief that the world will end in 12 years if we do not act on climate change.
The Green New Deal was brought to a vote in the Senate on March 26, 2019. In almost unprecedented fashion the proposal was struck down 57 – 0. Four Democrats joined 53 Republicans while the remaining Democrats, some who publicly voiced support for the legislation voted present. Normally I would chalk this up to a poorly written bill of which the ramifications are not clearly calculated. The fact that the bill received zero support when nearly every bill is split down party lines says something greater.
Some people like AOC, as she refers to herself on Twitter and many others believe climate change is an existential threat. We hear that phrase a lot! Vocabulary.com defines it as if something is existential it has to do with human existence. If you wrestle with big questions involving the meaning of life, you may be having an existential crisis. … For instance, the objections of your mother-in-law may pose an existential threat to the continuation of your Friday night card game.
Obviously, there are many people in this country and around the world who feel very strongly that our world will come to an end in the very near future if we don’t do something about climate change. In my book, The War For The Middle I address this topic in a way that is succinct and unique. I label the topic of Climate Change as one of six political landmines that bring up an endless debate. The following passage is from my book. I hope you enjoy it.
When I decided to write about climate change the first thing that came to mind was the children’s book Chicken Little. The illustration above is of the main characters discussing how ‘the sky is falling’. Chicken Little believes this because he was hit in the head by an acorn. He goes and tells the other animals in the forest one by one the sky is falling and they continue on until they meet the fox.
Now depending on which version of the story you read this tale will have different meanings for you. Some versions have the fox eating all the animals, thus signifying their doom. Other versions have the animals smiling kindly with a laugh and reassuring the confused little chicken who has a bump on his head that the sky is not falling and they will all be fine. If there was ever a children’s tale that summarizes the current debate on climate change this is definitely it.
Show me statistics and scientists who have data supporting climate change and you will find an equal amount in that profession who dispute it. These are rational people who are well educated and have spent the same amount of time studying the earth’s atmosphere and doing research on the field of climate change. Whether you believe global warming/cooling is a man-made phenomenon that will doom us all in the near or distant future or are on the side of many who believe the jury is still out on this subject, there are many people who are in the middle that can see validity in both sides of the debate.
Rather than me telling you what to think about the subject, I will ask you to formulate your own opinion, but, only after you conduct research that provides data and gives insight into the earth’s future. If you are saying hey, I’m not a scientist! Don’t worry, neither am I. You know who is a strong proponent of Global Warming/Cooling, created a documentary/film on the matter and even won a Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to save humanity…Al Gore. No, he is not a scientist but, he was a Vice-President under Bill Clinton. He is also a very well paid public speaker who did not have a net worth of more than a hundred million dollars before he entered the White House but, definitely has been the recipient of a climate change fortune since leaving. Do an internet search of Al Gore’s global warming predictions from his film An Inconvenient Truth released in 2006. It had predictions of what would happen to the earth in ten years if we didn’t act immediately. Spoiler alert, more than a decade has gone by and none have come true.
I was watching a special on the weather last night. It was hosted by four local meteorologists and had multiple segments from other contributors. An interesting side-note that was mentioned by one of the guests. They said up until 300 BC the great minds of that time thought the weather was controlled by the Gods. I found an article online that goes into more detail. Click on the link below if you want to be amused. It’s amazing! What was once indisputable truth promoted by the elites to the masses has since been debunked all these years later and was nothing more than misguided fear-based misinformation. Funny how life works like that.
